Hi folks New guy here

Just upgraded to a 722 receiver. I am a little confused with the setup. If I use a HDMI cable from the 722 to the splitter and then to the TV I get picture but no sound. I need the splitter because the wife has a Blue-Ray DVD on it. If I use the Component setup with an audio cable I get picture and sound. I think the picture is not as good with the component setup right? I have tried unplugging the component cable and leaving the audio cable plugged in but still don't get sound.

I think I read that all jacks were powered all the time so it would seem to a newbie like me that the HDMI - Audio Cable setup should work but it doesn't.

Any ideas would be gratefully accepted

Al

With HDMI the audio is encoded onto the HDMI cable so that's the only place you will get audio from.

As for the splitter, I don't think you are using it as a splitter but a combiner which won't work with HDMI. If you want to use 2 devices on one HDMI input port you need a priority HDMI switch so that the low priority port is the 722 and the high priority port is the Blu Ray player. So if the Blu Ray is turned off then the 722 is connected.

As to you're question about picture quality. The quality on both component and HDMI is exactly the same except when it comes to 1080p. Up to 1080i there is no difference other than component does take a separate audio feed.

So you can easily and comfortably use component video to the TV. If the TV is capable of 5.1 decoding and output then your sound to the TV should be TOS-Link. But I haven't seen any TV's that have that mode, mostly is fiber out. Stereo to the TV with good quality RCA connectors would be just fine.

What do you man by splitter? are you using an HDMI Switch that allows you to choose between several HDMI inputs.

Please provide the splitter make and model. You are on the right track with audio via HDMI, just need the right setup. Did you try hdmi straight from the sat to tv to see if the audio will work?

The audio RCA red/white does work when the hdmi is active, but you shouldn't need it in that case. Sounds like a tv setup issue or a splitter pass-through issue.

Is your dvd input to the tv working for audio and video on the same connection you are trying to get the sat on? Try turning off the dvd.

Maybe some more clarification.
1. You are saying that the TV only has 1 HDMI input?
2. You are using the tv and it's built in speakers as your only source of sound?

The Component setup with an audio cable should give you a picture as good as you get with the HDMI cable. However, if you are comparing pictures on a 55" screen, there is a remote chance that the HDMI could produce a better picture if you were viewing a THX set up disc. I say this because at one time Oppo built two , Up-Conversion, DVD players. Although the average user would never see a difference, the company recommended one if you were going to feed your TV or projector using Component video cable and the other if you were using HDMI. This was probably because some setups, me included, required a 50' cable from the A/V system to the projector. I am not sure that back them you could even get a 50' HDMI cable.
