i searched for this but didn't really find an answer (just complaints). what exactly is the 722 doing in the middle of the night when the it reboots and makes noise?

It's basically rebooting after doing maintenance routines and downloading the guide. You can change the time it does the updates and maintenance by going:
Menu, 8, 5, and change the time there. Default time is 3:00 AM.

if i change it to the day and happened to be watching tv at the time it updated- what would happen?
It will reboot the receiver but it will prompt you to do it. I set the one in the bedroom for a time when we're not at home.
