The skip back button is pretty inconsistent on my 722K. Sometimes it will skip back 10 secs, 30 secs, minutes, and even to the beginning of the recording. It is not prejudice to any channel. It happens with both TV1 and TV2. Currently they are both connected to SD tvs. My software is at L655. This is also my second 722K, the first was replaced to fix this issue which obviously did not work.

It's not just your 722k. It does the same thing on my 622, 722 and 211k. I may be totally wacko, but it's my theory that it is designed that way to be the solution to the Tivo patent infringement. The randomness started about the time that Dish claimed they were no longer in violation.

And what's your take on JFK?:D

Laugh all you want, but I believe rthomp03 nailed it. Without an index of I frames, the receiver can only guess how far to skip backward (or forward) in order to equal a certain number of seconds.

Krell,

Are you saying that in order to not be in violation of the patent, E* removed tracking the I frames so that 'its not in violation of the patent'?

That was my understanding from reading the several Tivo threads on this forum. I bought a 501 late, just in time to fall in love with it's silky smooth trick play, only to have that disappear after a few months. It was replaced with the jerky ff and rw, and wildly inexact skips we see on all subsequent receivers. (I had a 625, and now have a 722 and two 612s.) Some people have tried to tell me it's not that bad on the 722. But I chalk that up to comments made by those who never saw what the 501 with the I frame index could do.

If that is the reason why it happens, that's pretty lame. I always thought it was a bug that would be fixed eventually. It is so frustrating to be halfway through watching a recorded show, get to a commercial, hit forwards a few times to skip the commercial but go to far, then when you hit back twice it jumps to the start of the recording. My wife could tell you how many times I have cursed out the 722 for doing that.

No kidding! I have not observed my 722 nor my 612's jump to the start of a recording, unless we have just started playback from the beginning. So the inaccuracy I'm talking about wrt the Tivo case is much much smaller than the problem you report.
