In December Dish installed an 811 & 301 in different rooms. Instead of a splitter they used a 2 output grounding block in basement, hooked up to cold water pipe, with 1 line going to each receiver. Does this seem right? I may add a 3rd receiver in the future, how would I do it? Thanks.

The grounding block in the basement is just that, a 'ground block'

It is not a splitter in any form or fashion. It is supposed to take the brunt of a lightning strike and protect your equipment.

If you want to add another unit later on, they will have to come out and put up a Quad LNB and run another wire to the 3rd TV.(and/or a 4th TV)

The quad will give you up to 4 811/301 combinations or a single dual tuner(522) and your existing 811 and a 301. Etc...

It is not supposed to handle a lightning strike, and it won't. It is there to protect you by giving a short a path to ground and hopefully popping a circuit breaker.
