921 part of package in future?

When I connected my 811 receiver last week, I asked the Dish rep if the 921 will drop in price soon. He said, unofficially, that the 921 will be made available in a package deal...for free... in the near future. Of course, "near future" could be our children's generation...

Anyone know for sure when and if the 921 is any closer to becoming affordable to the average Joe?

Not true.

The 921 is expected to be discontinued when the 942 is released. From what we know the 942 will be a lease only receiver and will not be available for sale.

Because of this yes you will get it for free, although there will be fees for it built into the leasing plan.

Well that sucks!!! Was hoping to purchase one depending on if I feel like jumping into the Abyss. Hope they change their mind on this.

So you're saying that the 921 will be free because IT will be on a lease deal as well as the 942? Or the 942 will be free because it will be on a lease deal? I am little confused.

I bet the 921 will still be a $999 silver lump!! (even though I do enjoy it!) Hopefully it will hold some resale value like the OLD 6000 did. They will start fire selling the 921 at time of 942 release, like they did the 6000 just prior to release of 921. (It turned out to be a great deal for some of us who got $150 6000s, then got early 921s in Jan., and then sold 6000 for $550 on Ebay!!!!!!!!) Thus, I really got my 921 for half price :D

If the 942 is going to be a lease, it is never FREE. The lease will probably have a minimum 2 years with a high early cancel penalty & still need to send unit back, like the 500 series leases. DISH owns the box.
$1000/24months = ~ $41.00/month
???? lease ~$20-25/month.

Advantage is less costly upgrading to newer units every 2 years!! I would have prefered to lease the 921 knowing that it will be trash tech after a few years.

Plus, if it is a lease THEY own the unit and will be responsible for repairs...... Given their fairly high failure rate, this may not be such a bad thing long term (although they are replacing them now, what happens when my unit hits 3 years old? I am keeping the extended warranty, but others will not)

The whole reason i got into satellites was so i did not have to lease from the cable company. i keep talking myself out of switching to directv because of the money i have invested in the receivers i own. the way dish is going, they are making it real easy for people to make up their minds. i hope they get their act together.

The only reason the 6000 was going for such a high price was because they were used in the hacking community. I noticed the person I sold my 6000 to purchased 4 6000's and a 5000 over the course of two weeks. I'd have a hard time believing this guy was spending over $2500.00 for units that simply used to receive legitimate E* programming. Try getting $500 for a 6000 now

Just checked Ebay. They are still going for $500-600 final pricing!
Also some are buying just the 8vsb module for $150!!! You can get a Samsung 151 OTA tuner for that!

The main difference between the 6000 and the 821 is the DVI out or are there other major differences (e.g. circuit changes)?

Better not be for free anytime soon,

or they're goin' to have lots of 'splaining to do to some very, very irate 921 customers.

One thing is certain, If it for free there is a catch. Nothing is for free when it comes to video equipment! Who was it that said, "The sky is falling?"

 Near future?

Can't do that. There is a new HD-DVR receiver called 942, and 921 expected to be discontinued when the 942 releases probably 2005 or 2006.

Sorry. :no
