Here is one I am working on for my NewingtonWeather.COM webpage. SInce 2012 I have been broadcasting the Newington Police, Fire and EMS scanner feed. About a year ago they went digital so I got a digital scanner to keep things going. I worked with the Chief of Police to ensure that routine calls would remain in the clear. when they went digital. SInce the digital scanner is just under $1,000 now most people in town just listen to my scanner.
I run a Facebook group for my town and one of the most common question on the group is "What are all the sirens" or "why are all the police at...?" well using AI, I will soon be able to let people find out that info on their own.
I asked AI to make me a program that I can run on a PC that can listen to my scanner feed, record each call and have AI listen to it and report just the real calls for service for the Police Fire and EMS services and give a summary of those calls online.
It started off with me running an AI model on my computer using Whisper to analyze the audio, but this trouble decoding the audio correctly. So then I started sending the audio to openai to do the legwork and it decodes things fine.
It has took a lot of training to get it to where it is now. Had to teach it all the street names in town, had to teach it all the police 10 codes, had to teach it all the shortcut names the police use. And then for privacy reasons instead of listing the exact address and names of people mentioned in the call, it will omit the names and generalize the address so instead of reporting 1045 Main Street it will report "in the 1000 block of main street"
It has taken about a month and now I am getting close to launching it to the general public. I added to it a low latency scanner player as well which I had AI make for me. The audio heard through this player is almost in total sync with what's coming out of my scanner speaker at home. This way with one webpage people can see what the sirens were for and also allow them to tune in anytime and hear what's going on. All without the need of any special app. No ads, no cookies, just pure information.
Over the last few days I have added some more smarts to it, so if the AI is able to follow and track the call, it can give updates to the calls to let people know what the call was about and what the resolution of that call was. It does not do this for all calls as at times we can have a number of calls happening at once making it hard for them to track.
The AI also helped me tune my scanner to get the best sound possible out of it which is needed to make this work. ANd because it is digital there is sometimes issues with the sound quality still, its just part of the game. But since I work with the police department on things I know the audio issues I have they also have on their radios as well.
I run a backup scanner which sends all the digital traffic for my area to Broadcastify Calls which is the traffic for many towns not just mine, however I use software called SDRtrunk, which besides sending everything its getting from our local digital feed, it also just sends a seperate feed of our towns police fire and EMS. So if something happens to my main scanner, it is set to automatically flip over to my backup broadcastify feed.
Everything is also logged and the voice files for each call saved. A few times a day I take the logs and send them to ChatGPT for them to analyze and see what we can make better. Sometimes it will ask me to sent it a wav file of a call that it had trouble with to rehear it and it learns from this. One of the hardest things I had in doing this was to prevent it from repeating calls as in my town depending on the emergency send it to the Fire Department and then the police... or the police and then EMS and sometimes all 3 services would be deployed to the same call. The AI was posting all 3 calls separately. Now I have it combining them all into one, and updating the calls in real time so if fire is called and then the police are asked to go there as well it will now say "Fire and Police were called to a fire alarm at..."
I also added an editor that I can access, it the editor I can change what is shown to the public, I can see an unedited transcript of what the AI heard as well as click to hear the actual audio incase the AI didn't hear things correctly. This editor is protected by password and two factor and the data and audio is not publicly accessible
The summary's are kept online for 3 hours, if I went longer than that I would need to make it use mysql instead of just straight php. The audio files are however saved for 7 days. The Proscan software I use on my SDS-200 scanner also stores all the audio and keeps that audio for 90 days. This comes in handy and have the PD ask me for audio clips that their system didn't record correctly.
Anyways I think I am a few days away from launching it just making some final tweaks. But if anyone wants to see it you can check it out at
Newington Scanner Summaries I had it password protected so just those helping me test it could access it, but just removed the protection since it is in a place now where I am comfortable with other people seeing it.
Now sending the audio to be analyzed by OpenAI does cost me money, but in my first month of doing this the cost has been under $8. I feel this cost is worth helping out the community.
So now when people in my town hear sirens then can know better of what's going on and why. I don't know of anyone else doing this so I am kind of proud of it. I feel this is a neat use of the technology.
