ALL channels in HD - When?

I am interested in knowing what the plans are for everyone changing to 100% HD transmissions.

I know there is some Government deadline, but is everyone going to wait until that arrives before switching?

I am particularly interested in programs shown nationally on CBS, NBC, etc. (which have some programming in HD), but what about BBC, FSC (Fox Soccer Channel) and other non-OTA channels?

Is there a website (either belonging to the channel or independent of the networks) that gives this sort of info?

There is no law or mandate to be HD by "X date", only digital; they are not the same. I would not imagine 100% HD until at least 2012 even if by then; and heck by that time we may possibly be looking at another TV broadcasting method.

The legislation does not even apply to non-OTA channels at all--they are not required to ever go HD.

However, I'm sure they all will at some point, just as all channels went to color from black and white in the 1960s. No one knows when, however.

I wouldn't imagine this happening for a very long time. HD requires all links in the chain to work. Start with set design, cameras, and post-production. Then you have to have the delivery infrastructure to get it to cable and sat cos. Then the cable and satcos have to have the infrastructure (and will) to deliver it to the end user.

Then the end user has to have the equipment and service to make it happen. Which really drives everything since low-end content creators have no incentive to spend $$$ on all that stuff just to maybe make 5 people happy. Same for the cable and satcos.

Not really sure it will ever be all HD.

Recording the massive amounts of data needed to produce UHDV definition also posed a problem for NHK. Its engineers were originally only able to make 34 seconds' worth of recording. They have now built a disc recorder system made up of 16 HDTV recorder units with a capacity of about 3.5 terabytes, allowing them to shoot 18 minutes of UHDV footage.

based upon current data for networks that predated the introduction of HD (it means Voom don't count) there were over 185 channels in the US that are not the BIG 6. So far 9 of them are broadcasting in HD. The mandate was introcuced in 1996, it is now 2006. Not accounting for a "landslide" factor ... the remaining 176 nets should be moved NLT January 1, 2118 ... based on current data. This is based solely upon the current migrations.

Amazing the # of people that think the digital conversion in 2009 is actually a HD conversion. I even heard a cable installer talk about how everything would be HD in 2009.
