My neighbor ask for my assistance getting a signal on her TV. She has a Dish receiver and a Directv antenna and swears that she has used this setup in the past. Is this possible? Can you receive a Dish network signal on a Directv antenna?

If they are legacy equipment it can be done. None of the new band stacking would work. Dish legacy equipment and DirecTV are alike.

Yes...if it's legacy, you can. I've seen somewhere (here maybe) a description of someone's setup that receives both Dish Network and DirecTV using one DirecTV dish. It involves three legacy type LNB's on a DirecTV dish, splitting off into respective multiswitches, etc.

What if the Dish Receiver is a 311 receiver. Would that work with the old original Directv antenna? What satellite should a 311 be looking at?

The 311 should be looking at 110 and 119. DIRECTV looks at 101 and 110 which are also nine degrees apart. This spacing is no accident.

Thanks for responding. Do you know if the 311 is a legacy type?
All DISH receivers can work with legacy equipment. The same cannot be said of the switchgear, but that doesn't enter into the equation on a single receiver setup. The 311 is the current SD receiver and has been available for a couple of years.

We could be of considerably more help if you told us specifically what problems your neighbor was having. It could be the dish getting bumped (or being pointed at the DIRECTV satellites), the cable company sectioning out the cable so it couldn't be re-used, or a simple failure to subscribe to service.

She is simply not receiveing any signal. Antenna is soildly mounted and is in same position where she previously received good signal.

Could be a number of things:
  • Dead LNB
  • Damaged cable
  • Loose connectors
  • Plugged into the wrong connector on the back of the receiver
The next need-to-know would be the results of a check switch. This should tell whether the LNB(s) is/are bad or not.
