ATSC 3.0 Update: Final Arguments Are In...

Lon.TV predicts the same result that I had.

1) Predicts that the FCC will not set a date to replace ATSC 1.0 broadcasts with ATSC 3.0 broadcasts.
2) Predicts that instead the FCC will eliminate the requirement that broadcasters simulcast ATSC 1.0 along with the ATSC 3.0.
3) Predicts that the FCC will not require manufacturers to include ATSC 3.0 tuners on TV sets.
4) Predicts that the FCC will allow ATSC 1.0 broadcasts to use mpeg 4.
5) Predicts that stations will not abandon ATSC 1.0 for the foreseeable future.
6) Predicts that the FCC will not make any decision on DRM.

I agree with the first 5 predictions but I am unsure regarding DRM. The FCC may take issue with A3SA controlling the encryption process. They may want a more neutral party that would allow multiple platforms instead of only using Android.

This spring we will see which predictions come true.

I would love to see them eliminate DRM all together. The two channels in my market that don't use DRM, WGN and WGBO, work much more smoothly than the encrypted ones. I have a Zapperbox, and I have received certificate errors for DRM when I am not connected to the internet, or sometimes I need to refresh...wish there was no DRM...
