I am having the worst experience with my dish hopper. We have had it for about 6 year and for the last 6 months, it has been an awful experience. Freezing, blank screens, and blah blah blah. I call dish and they keep having me reset the receiver and it won't last a day. Sometimes I reset it 3 - 6 time a day. I want to know if it is just me have these problems or is it a dish issue. They will upgrade my equipment to the hopper 3 for a price. Looking for advice. Don't know if I am at the right place for opinions. Very frustrated with dish.

Get the Hopper 3. If you've had your current Hopper for 6 years it's probably a Hopper 1 and is due for replacement. If you have a Hopper 1 then you might get a free or nearly free upgrade to a Hopper 2 which is quite a bit better than a Hopper 1 but isn't even close to a Hopper 3 performance and features wise.

Thanks for responding and the information. They want to charge $99 to upgrade, which I am all for. The problem is that the wife has tons of things that she has recorded and doesn't want to lose them. Dish tells me that going to the H3, I will see no difference is speed. In fact the processor in my current unit is faster.

The Hopper 3 is a lot, lot, lot faster than a Hopper 2 which is a lot faster than a Hopper 1, which is what you probably have. If a Dish rep told you otherwise then they were flat out wrong.

Also, as long as your old Hopper has the new Carbon User Interface (CUI) you can transfer the recordings from your old Hopper to the new one using an ethernet wire.

Get an external powered EHD and transfer your recordings to it. You can then transfer back to H3, or just watch from the drive.

I thought you could transfer recordings. According to dish you can't. How can I tell if it has CIU interface? There is a ethernet port in the back. Sorry I am not very tech savvy.

Press the Sys Info button under the door on the front of the Hopper and read the Software Version from the TV screen.

Software version U242. One thing I might like is the 16 tiers of recording, have you any experience with that? Good or bad. And I do have a EHD for transfering. We got this equipment on 4-15-2013. I may be time for an upgrade. Gonna work on the wife over dinner tonight.
Tell her yall need early Xmas gift. I mean ask her! She will be happy happy with Hopper 3. :)

With 16 tuners on the Hopper 3, you likely will never run into "recording conflicts" again (or if you do, you need to find an alternate time-waster LOL!) Anyway, the only time I've ever run out of tuners when I did so on purpose. There's rarely 16 programs worth watching in an entire day or two, let alone at the same time.

You have a Hopper 2 now if it's on software U242. Yes, ethernet transfer will work with that software.

The Hopper 3 will be a great upgrade for you.

Transferring recordings from the old Hopper to the new Hopper 3 by Ethernet cable is simple. my Hopper 2 was at 100% full and took about 56 hours to transfer all the 1000+ recordings. We were able to watch and record during the transfer process. Most CSRs did not know this could be done.

I want to thank all for your responses. I made an appointment to upgrade to H3. Hopefully this will end my misery. I just want to come home from work and watch the stupid TV. Also the CS rep indicated that they can transfer all of the recordings from the old hopper. We will see.

They all have the CUI now. If your menu, etc changed a few months ago from the original UI, you have the CUI
