Breaking contract question?

Hi all..we've been Dish customers for a long time. We currently have 1 year left on our contract.

I hate to think about it, but it seems that we may need to drop dish altogether because finances are tight.

Now I chatted with an online agent who said there is a 240 dollar cancel fee or 10 dollars a month prorated for the amount of time left on the contract.

I'm presuming that since we are at almost a year into the contract, we will be charged the 10 dollars a month.

Am I correct in this? How do they charge it? Is it all at once or what? We have never broken a contract so I have no idea. I was wondering if any of you have been through this before?

Thanks

If you cancel they charge you for everything that they can, including non returned leased receivers if that applies.
I think they are called Account Specialists any ways they are the equivalent of Directv Retention people, most knowledgeable and able to do things. You may be able to move to the Welcome Pack @ $9.95/mo. it is as cheap as the termination fee but is paid monthly and gives you some programming until times improve.

Right so if I cancelled I would have to pay 130 dollar cancel fee all at once...plus make sure all leased equipment goes back ASAP.

Now, do they give you any credit for unused monthly service that has already been paid for towards the cancel fee?

The lower packages on their site really dont offer much savings to make a difference, so I would have to cancel everything for it to matter.

I really do not want to cancel, have been a customer since 2001..but I don't see anything else i can do.

Boba had a good idea. See if you can get the welcome pack. Cheaper than cancelling

Can I still hang on to my 10 HD channels with the welcome pack? I'm asking because I don't generally watch the SD channels, my eyes have been spoiled. :)

Thanks

Well if SD isn't good enough for your eyes I guess you need to cancel and pay the $130. To me any programming is better than none or just OTA. If you can't afford DISH you probably can't afford internet either.

Wow, no need to be rude..I just downgraded my service as low as I possibly can under my contract..it will make a small difference, but a difference all the same. It will have to do because I am not comfortable breaking a contract.
