Actually the paperclip trick works great here in the Hartford CT area.

With a simple paper clip I can get all of the Hartford stations at my house.

Won't work here, only 5KW or less translators 10-12 miles away. Even indoor antennas will not get all channels.

I'm still occasionally entertained by my redneckky friend with the bed springs in a tree with a pulley and rope a ways-away from his tv antenna. Running outside in the snow and a friend yelling "it's better....no, it got worse.....a little bit higher" from inside while the Bills were playing. About 90 bird miles away from Buffalo. Is there a HOA clause in your 'hood forbidding tree-springs?
