Can I cancel DVR Service?

Is it possible to keep my 522 receiver and the recordings on it but drop the actual DVR service? I have an alternate and, for me, more convenient way of recording now. I haven't yet transferred any of my recordings over as I'm hopeful I can maintain those on the receiver. Anyone have any experiences?

The only way to remove the DVR service and the fee is to downgrade to a non DVR reciever and return the DVR reciever, if you have a DVR on your account the fee is attached.

Dish Network has their 222 which is a dual-room receiver without the DVR.
