I have an old Echostar 3000 receiver that I have carried around for years in an RV. I use a single LNB dish for this set-up. I was just given a d/p 301 receiver. I have not activated it yet-wanted to see if it works! When I replace the old box with the new I do not get any signal in the strength bar-none. I could be wrong, but I believe that even a non-activated box would receive and show some signal indication. Am I right, which would make the 301 bad.

correct
all receivers (even non/previously activated ones) will show a signal strength as long as you're aimed at the sat (and the receiver works) ;)

I'm assuming you aimed the dish and confirmed the existing receiver shows signal?

Make sure that you run a check switch too. The receiver must know what LNBF it is working with to show a signal.
