Can you use a DIRECTV Genie with a marine satellite TV system?

Now’s the time to be on the water enjoying the best of what life has to offer. Of course, you went out on the water to enjoy the sun, the privacy, and the peaceful days. But, when the day is over, you probably still want to be connected. Satellite internet is great, but you’ve already figured out that data caps make it a bad choice for streaming. After all, you can run into overage charges in under 4 days!

That’s why satellite TV for marine is having what the kids call “a moment.” Folks who were rushing last year to disconnect their older systems are rushing this year to reconnect them. There’s a lot of great content on satellite TV and it all comes in without affecting your bandwidth allotment.

DIRECTV Genie seems like the way to go

With a DIRECTV Genie system, you can watch or record at least 5 programs at the same time, depending on the Genie you choose. You can even hook up a Gemini device which will let you stream using your satellite internet, all on the same box (of course that part would add to your bandwidth allotment.) So it seems like a great luxury add-on for your boat.

The only problem you’ll find is — depending on which marine TV system you have, you may not be able to get a Genie DVR. Here’s what you need to know.

Smaller dishes won’t work with the Genie DVR

If you have an Intellian i3 or i4, a KVH TV3 or TV5, or any satellite system that can’t see multiple satellites at once, you can’t use a Genie. This is true whether or not you have updated the boat to SWM technology. Since about 2019, the Genie system has not had the option to work with single-satellite systems. It must be used with a Slimline dish or something like an Intellian s6HD or KVH UHD7 that emulates a Slimline dish. If you have a smaller dish system, you simply cannot tell the Genie that’s what you have.

You can tell the Genie you have a Slimline dish, and it will generate an error that you can bypass, but the same error will keep coming up over and over again, interrupting your TV experience. It’s really not going to make anyone happy.

What can you do?

This is the perfect time to upgrade your satellite TV system with the larger dish. DIRECTV is actively shutting off standard definition local channels which means if you want to have local channels, you’ll need a multi-satellite dish.

If you upgrade now, you’ll have a system that will work for you for years to come. Choosing the right system will give you access to international channels, 4K programming, and so much more. Paired with a satellite internet system, you’ll be able to get on-demand programming (of course, this will take bandwidth) and use streaming apps. It’s a win in every possible way.
