Can’t get cell service? Too far away? No problem for Signal Connect

Here’s something you probably didn’t know: your cell phone doesn’t work well unless it’s within about 1.5 miles of a cell tower. In some cases, like high-band 5G, you can lose service in as little as 500 feet. We tend not to think about this because the major carriers have done a great job of covering populated areas with cell towers. But what if you’re in the middle of nowhere? What if you’re out at sea?

That’s where Signal Connect comes in

There are specialized solutions available for this kind of problem, and they’re not some sort of magic. They’re just simple applications of electrical engineering. But, they’re not always simple to put into place. That’s why an expert like Signal Connect comes in.

What can be done about poor service due to being too far from the towers? Here are some options we’ve put in for customers in the past.

Option 1: Powerful cell phone signal booster

I talk a lot about cell phone signal booster systems. I think every home and office should have one, because practically every form of building will block cell phone signals very effectively. I don’t understand why they aren’t part of every real estate transaction, honestly.

Using a heavy-duty cell phone booster like the weBoost Office line can really make a difference. It can be scaled to work with larger homes and offices easily. It can be installed by almost anyone with even a little bit of construction savvy and there’s practically no upkeep required. Your Signal Connect rep can recommend the right system for spaces from 6 to 60,000 square feet.

Option 2: Big honkin’ antenna

One of the reasons a cell phone signal booster works so well is that it has an outdoor antenna. That antenna works better than the one on your phone, simply because it’s bigger and it’s placed higher up where it gets better reception. Following that idea, we have worked to create a selection of the best cellular antennas. One of them is the rocket-shaped antenna you see above. This Digital Antenna product delivers close to ten times the amount of sensitivity that you would get from your cell phone. Other products we have in our arsenal include highly directional ones that let us find the exact tower we want to target. When we put in a cell phone signal booster system with a specific antenna like this one, you’ll see real improvements in the cell signal inside.

Option 3: Remote antenna

There’s a new option for folks who never thought they could get cell service. The Zinwave solution offered by Wilson Electronics takes cell phone boosting to another level. In addition to providing an incredibly customized version of cell phone boosting, the Zinwave solution can work with antennas that aren’t even on the building!

A direct fiber optic link can be used to put an antenna on a nearby hill or tall building. This can help bring cell service into areas where the towers are blocked by hills or other buildings.

This is a custom solution, and I’ll be honest it can be a little expensive. It’s a multi-step process where signals are measured on site using special equipment, a plan is created, and the installation is done by qualified technicians. It’s not an off-the-rack solution, and it’s not for everyone. But it’s an option for those extreme cases when there just isn’t another option.

Option 4: Working with cell carriers

We hear your frustration. When you don’t have great cell service, it seems like there’s no one to talk to. Simply walking into the local cell phone store and complaining isn’t going to get you anywhere. That’s where Signal Connect comes in. We work with all the major carriers all the time and our voice as dealers is often louder than any single customer’s. We’ll help design equipment solutions alongside the carriers to make sure you get service in your area. Often times this kind of thing isn’t free, but it can really pay dividends if you’re willing to put in the time and money.
