cell phone adapter for credit card machine

Is there such a device where you can hook up your cell phone to a credit card telephone line instead of hooking up the cc machine directly to a land line?

You can get credit card readers for the iPhone, but I am not know of an adapter from a normal credit card machine to cell phone.

These do exist. I have seen them being used. Contact your VAR rep for merchant account. Go to your local flea market and the pros there usually have the cell phone connected cc receipt printers.
An alternative is what I used to use is a total software solution and the receipt is emailed to the buyer. The magnetic stripe reader is USB connected to the laptop. My software was not compatible with a cell phone, just windows XP.
