Need some help - looked thru the forums and didn't find the solution. DirecTV with HD access (not HD Extra), DirecTV non-DVR receiver (Model H20 - RF HD model) with a Sony 52" monitor.

The receiver defaults to the HD version of a channel. Since we have not (and will not) opt to pick-up the HD Extra service, we get a 721 error message (channel not purchased). Is there any way to configure the receiver to select the SD channel as default? No problem selecting in guide, just can't type 362 from the remote w/o it picking the HD channel.

Thanks in advance.

hd to sd channels

Have you tried setting up a new favorites list and just check the SD version of the channel, then use your new favorites as your main guide.

Yes, tried that. Unfortunately, that doesn't do the trick. The default, probably to annoy those that haven't signed up for HD Extra, is the HD version regardless of what you do with favorites.

Do as Rufus said, make a favorites list up and DON"T put the HD EXTRA channels in it.

Why would you want it to default to the SD channels when you probably watch mostly HD channels now anyways ?

I think the OP is under the impression that there are SD versions of the HD Extra channels, which is not the case.

The HD Extra channels are HD only, so you will not get them at all without the package.

True, but did you notice the OP mentioned 362, which is TWC, which SHOULD be part of his pkg.

HMS - first of all, you need to figure out WHY you're getting a 721 on this channel; do you actually know WHICH HD channels you get & don't? You're probably going to need to call D* & have them send you out a rehit, so that you DO get the channels you're supposed to.
But as paul says above, don't get confused by which channels ARE in the HD xtra pak, of which NONE have SD counterparts.
OK, one last stupid question - you ARE using one of the new HD dishes, correct? (NOT the older oval ones)
