Iceberg, this is slightly off-topic, but related to my possible decision to purchase the 8000HD. I have a few questions:

Woudl I be capable of picking up satellites you mentioned (like AMC3) using an old round 18" DirecTV dish nd existing DirecTV LNB? You also mention that you're using a motor for your dish, do you think a motor would be compatible with the DirecTV dish I mentioned?

And a quick question about the motor: How easy is it to point using the motor and your receiver, compared to pointing the old fashioned way? Is it as simple as initially setting the adjustments on the dish, and then never having to actually touch the dish again?

Sorry for going off-topic, but I really appreciate yuor help. Thanks!

See Icebergs What can I get with an 18" dish or a Dish 500?? Thread

No it would not, DBS companies such as Dish Network and DirecTV use circular polarity which uses special LNB's. You would need a slightly bigger KU Dish and a linear (Standard) KU LNB to pick up a satellite such as AMC3.

For a few Dish / LNB setups check these out for a better idea.

Hi guys, just curious... if ku=ku=ku, then why can't a guy just slap a linear lnb on an 18" dish? are the dbs satellites putting out a "hotter" signal than the others or something?

Hard for me to explain so hopefully someone can, but the reason is polarity of the signal.

Standard KU is Linear Polarity
DBS KU is Circular ploarity

yes. DBS is much stronger than C or KU. That is why DBS needs to be 9 degrees apart from each other (61.5,72.5,82,91,101,110,119,129,148)

KU Band is lowered power so they can get 2 degree spacing but you need a larger dish. Can you get the really strong stuff with a 18" dish and a linear? sometimes (depedning on location and other factors)

I was able to get CCTV from G3 with a 18" dish and KU LNB. Of course, the skew was 0 so it was just aim and fine tune that. On IA6 Doc Scott came in but nothing else was stable

There's nothing stopping you from doing it. The problem is DBS birds do put out a stronger signal than FSS ones. That's how you can get away with such a small dish for those services.

Another problem is many of these dishes have no easy way to skew the lnb if you're pointed somewhere other than true south.

I have gotten KUIL with an 18 inch dish with a Ku linear LNB.

KUIL is so strong you can probally pick it up with a pie pan from Bakers Square.

I am glad that I am useing a 10 foot dish with C/KU band PLL LNBs....
I know some people don't have room for a 10 foot dish,,,,but its nice to also watch
feeds on KU and C band.....Along with HBO,STARTZ,DISCOVERY among others in HD on C Band.....................JohnnyT

Thanks for all the info, guys. I'm perfectly happy getting dvb from my 10' bud, but was just curious about the 18".

Hey Ice. How do you like your CS8000? What programming are you able to pull (as far as HD is concerned) ?

I like it. There are a couple bugs in it but I've worked with enough receivers to know how to work around the little bugs.

besides my OTA channels? :D

on KU band, PBS and sports feeds. Havent got the C-Band aimed back yet but I did get Outdoor Network HD on it the other day. Still waiting for the HD feeds on C-band to pop up :)
