OK (groan!)...I can remember when you could fill the tank in a full-sized hog like an Impala or Galaxie for ~$5...! For reasons I can't remember, my parents would only "fill-up" when we were heading out on a trip. The rest of the time it was a minimal purchase on a more frequent basis. (We weren't THAT poor, but that was the norm!) One time my Mom pulled into our local filling station in our nearly-on-fumes '59 Electra (the one with the fins!) and said to the attendant (yes, I remember them, too!) "Give me 5" meaning gallons. You guessed it! Yours truly had to hike home and back to get another $4 so we could pay for the gas then drive home...!
