Changing the user's settings without asking or even notifying is inexcusable.

So far I've only found three things that are an improvement over the old UI. In decreasing order of importance:

1) It can now be set to come up on the channel it was turned off on, or on the home screen. Forcing the "smart channel" option on the old UI was inexcusable.

2) When deleting a timer, I'm no longer kicked back to the top of the timer list so I have to scroll back down if I want to review or edit more timers.

3) Porn channels can now be removed from the guide without locking the entire system.

Mine also. I wrote in another thread that the new update took up more space on my DVR but what actually was happening was I was recording PTAT. Just took me a couple of days to figure that out. LOL

The new CUI is more than just an user interface upgrade. It is also a completely new operating system. I'm sure they defaulted PTAT to on so, if you normally had PTAT on, you wouldn't lose recordings with the new system. Better safe than sorry. If it defaulted to off those who normally do PTAT recordings, and I bet that's the majority, would be totally upset and they would would be right to be upset.

No, it does not have to default to on or off. A better way to upgrade, is to read the existing state of PTAT before doing the upgrade, then after the upgrade restore the PTAT value to what is was before you upgraded. That is how most software upgrades work.

But this is not a software upgrade, it is a software replacement... If you went from Windows to OSX there is no way to read what was there. This particular new CUI is exactly that....

You read the state of PTAT (on or off) before the upgrade takes place, then you install the new operating system and set the PTAT state to what is was before. That is done all the time. For example, when I went from Windows 7 to Windows 10, Microsoft kept most of my settings intact.

Sorry, you're overstating this and yes, it certainly can retain settings from before. Did you have to re-configure your TV's settings (480, 720, 1080, etc), re-pair your remote(s), and so on ? Even guide settings related to channels I had blocked and even the 'order' channels are displayed (I have our guide set so that pressing the 'down' button on the remote moves from channel 100 to channel 108 while the default setting works the opposite direction).
