No. Owning does allow you to deactivate the joey as needed without having to return it to DISH.

I just added a 4k joey. It was the same price to lease or buy - but buying allowed me to avoid another 2-year commitment. Worth it for me.

In my case I would rather use a two year commitment for a preferred customer deal than for hardware.
