DIRECTV will soon allow Paramount+ streaming for subscribers

A few months ago, I told you that the Showtime streaming app was going away, to be replaced by a more expensive version of Paramount+. That meant DIRECTV and DISH customers who were getting the app for free with a subscription would lose that benefit.

There are few details to share, but it looks like DIRECTV at least will be offering subscribers access to the Paramount+ app with a subscription. No word yet if DISH will follow suit.

Let’s take a deeper dive

As of today, the programming service known as Showtime is now known as Paramount+ with Showtime. It’s a bit of a mouthful, but no matter. The good news here is that if you are a current Showtime subscriber you’ll get more value. Paramount+ content will be coming to those channels soon. DIRECTV’s press release and Paramount’s marketing materials specifically mention former streaming exclusives, Halo, Mayor of Kingstown, and Star Trek: Discovery. That’s good news for those who never saw the benefit of subscribing to the streaming service.

In the midst of DIRECTV’s lengthy Insider article talking about the change is nice little sentence. The message is repeated a few times:

Soon, you’ll be able to watch even more Paramount+ originals like 1883 and 1923, blockbuster movies like Top Gun: Maverick and action-packed live sports with the Paramount+ with SHOWTIME plan on Paramount+ app at no additional charge!

That’s a pretty clear statement as far as I’m concerned. It looks like DIRECTV subscribers will be able to use their logins to authenticate to the Paramount+ service for no charge. This restores the benefit that they took away last month. It’s not clear when this will actually happen, and I have to believe there will probably be a few hiccups in the early days. It’s almost a guarantee with streaming apps these days. But still it’s great news and adds value to having a traditional pay-TV subscription.

Paramount+ with Showtime on DIRECTV Satellite

If you sign up for Paramount+ with Showtime on DIRECTV, you’ll get two channels of linear Showtime programming, plus ten additional live channels, TMC, and FLIX. That’s a lot of content all available at any given time. When you’re watching Paramount+, you’re not bogging down your internet, leaving it free for other members of your family. You also get access to Paramount+ content on demand on DIRECTV, meaning that even if you don’t have a Gemini box, you’ll still be able to get Paramount+ content without having to change inputs. As always, an internet connection is required to use DIRECTV On Demand.

Dish, Comcast, YTTV still no deal.

Surprised me that you can access with Spectrum, the contract with Paramount was up this year(2024), expecting a fight like they had with Disney, maybe they came to terms already, did not publicize them.

AT&T U-verse, DIRECTV and DIRECTV Stream have been added to the Paramount+ Link with your provider list.
