Dish 721 Digital Audio Output Problem

I just hooked up a DishNetwork 721 receiver I have never used:

Connections:

1) S-Video to TV set.

2) Digital Audio Output to my A/V receiver digital input.

I did not hook up any other audio connections.

I have not been able to generate any sound - does the optical audio connection only work when watching programs broadcast in Dolby Digital?

I know my connection is correct, I am just curious why I can not generate any sound - I really don't want to use the composite audio connections as they are routed elsewhere.

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance.

Make sure the rubber boot on the end of the fiber optic line is removed and that the ends are clear. Check the input jack on the a/v receiver and the 721 to make sure theyr not plugged with something, also make sure that the one on the 721 is active by looking for the red light. Try also checking to see if you have to go into your a/v receivers menue to activate that port like you have to do on some other a/v equipment. Outside of these idea's the only other things could be a bad cable, bad 721, or a bad a/v wich you can test all three with other equipment.
