EchoStar Communications Corp.’s Dish Network direct-broadcast satellite service has begun carrying the Katrina Information Network.
The channel offers a variety of information relating to the disaster, including key telephone numbers, a survivor list to help victims find their loved ones and other updates from hurricane-relief agencies.
KIN was developed by Flying Colors Broadcasts, a Washington, D.C.-based media-production and distribution company.
DirecTV Inc. launched the network earlier this month, and that company also worked with the Federal Emergency Management Agency and the American Red Cross to install DirecTV systems in relief shelters throughout the Gulf Coast region.
“We are making every effort to support our customers in this trying time," EchoStar senior vice president of programming Eric Sahl said in a prepared statement. “KIN is a powerful tool to provide consistent and reliable information on the hurricane recovery efforts.”
