Hulu users would wait a lot longer to catch up on their favorite shows, if Dish Network VP of Online Content Development and Strategy Bruce Eisen had his way. “If I can watch Glee tomorrow morning and I don’t have to pay a pay TV service –- I think that’s bad,” Eisen said during a panel about cord cutting at the Streaming Media West conference this morning.
The model of sites like Hulu that make catchup content available immediately isn’t benefiting the industry, he said, adding that broadcasters should instead reserve catchup episodes for authenticated TV Everywhere services, and only make them available freely after 30 days. “If people decide that they don’t have to pay for pay TV, then one of the pillars (of the TV industry) starts crumbling,” he said.
Greg Kampanis, SVP of Content Strategy and Operations for South Park Digital Studios had a more measured take on the issue. “We would rather be behind an authenticated wall,” he said, adding that the industry was simply too slow to roll out these models, and studios like his had to roll out their own, less restricted offerings.
His own company had a wakeup call a few years ago when it saw a lot of its content getting really popular on pirate sites, with comScore reporting two million people frequenting pirate sites to download South Park episodes. “We were looking at it as a pretty large missed opportunity,” Kampanis said. South Park Studios decided to put all of its content online, and has since not only built what he called “a pretty successful online advertising business,” but also seen its ratings skyrocket, with the most recent South Park season premiere getting higher ratings than any previous premieres. “We know its not hurting our ratings,” said Kampanis.

And who said Dish wasn't greedy. Now I know why they have carriage disputes, they want to charge their customers maximum yet pay little to providers.
Screw them, as soon as find a method to cut them out, I will. (Apple mac mini, eye TV, and my big screen)

Who is providing DISH with a lot of their online content at DISHonline? Hulu.

Don't understand why he has a bone to pick with them when he relies on them for a lot of their content.

Dish is safe from Hulu for the near future. At least until the advertisers and networks start waking up to the amount of people watching online and making a concerted effort to market to those people. Online viewers mean nothing to their ratings so until that changes, Dish is fine.

He does realize that Glee is available free, OTA right? He should have picked a different example...

For many people, local channels are more valuable on their pay service than any others. If they weren't offered they'd switch providers, not put up an antenna. Meanwhile tons of people are still pirating these shows, even OTA, because on demand options are either lacking or not meeting a need.

I'm thankful for services outside of my provider, because who knows how long it would take for them to catch up.

IMO more damaging is stuff that Walmart and Amazon are starting up... you buy a movie you have access to a streaming version on Vudu/Amazon VOD. If that spreads to stuff like TV shows too at some point, that's a pretty big deal. Granted it's not day after release, it's another 'pillar' crumbling. Time to move out of that palace.

Hulu is run by the TV industry, so why is it killing it? Gives them a second chance to sell advertising for the same program! And don't blame your lack of foresight on someone else's foresight. If it is "killing" you, better change your business model. Or better yet, don't charge people $1500 a year for your service when it isn't competing with other options.

LOL I was thinking the same thing when I saw the thread title. I am glad that someone said it.

It is killing Dish because the locals are demanding big bucks to allow Dish to retransmit their signal which they give away OTA and on HULU. Dish is stuck, customers demand that Dish pay the rates to keep the locals, yet also get made because Dish costs more to bring them free content.

Probably because HULU blocked their content from GoogleTV along with NBC and ABC. I mean they have no problem selling Google TVs and one of the features is online streaming videos but Hulu and two of the networks took a chunk out of the offerings.

I would be more worried about websites that offer torrents, divx and flash videos that aren't official than Hulu.

I think we are in the Honeymoon period on Free internet TV shows right now anyways.

I think its a big scam waiting to happen. Offer the shows Free to people now online, and let them get used to watching their shows online.

Once Hulu and these other websites get a decent sized audience, and with more and more people getting products that bring the internet to their Television, then one day your going to see a subscription required to view the content.

The networks will be the ones who win, because they could probably get $5 per subscriber, which beats the heck out of the nickle they are getting from DISH Network or Directv.

Hulu isn't a danger to pay TV, they're a danger to Dish's business plan. They want to be the cheap service, and they're afraid the free alternatives will offer just as much... or enough for people to leave.

Hulu plus is out now and they charge $9.99 per month were is this free?

It is dish stupid business model that is hurting them not hulu.

You want next day show of glee you can only get it through hulu plus.

Sorry dish your stupid decision is hurting you like no 24 hour rsn or not re doing the 922 hardware when it was in beta etc.

Honestly? This guy needs to be FIRED.. He obviously has no business being in the television entertainment industry, to use THAT as an example, a normally over the air TV program that folks can get free....

No, hulu is not changing the world, nor is it widely available on most people's TVs. YES it is available on your computer....

What is CHANGING folks subscriber choices, is the fact that there are a crap load of people out of jobs, and the ones WITH jobs are getting small raises/promotions, that they can't keep up with the rise in costs for things like.... FOOD.

Sorry my friend, the price of my food has gone up and I got a measly raise this year, I'm dropping my EVERYTHING package to something more reasonable.....

And yeah, if I was hulu I'd be on the phone with Charlie on this, since yes Dishonline uses Hulu......

Sorry, I saw this and it really struck a nerve to how completely out of touch this guy is.....

IMHO the Dish exec was right to complain about Hulu. If all you want is available for free either OTA or OTI (over the Internet), even with ads on Hulu not plus, then why pay Dish? If you're having trouble paying for FOOD, then Good God drop all pay TV entirely.

This is what is funny- if you are depending on Hulu and or netflix as your main sources for TV, then you obviously have a high speed connection to support these services. This means you have a almost guaranteed chance at receiving OTA signals. If you are worried about content being blocked, or not available next day, buy a DVR and set it up. DTVPal or TIVOHD (small fee but will give you netflix too).

HULU is not killing the industry. The industry giants are doing the damage. People want one box to do it all, but because of disputes, this will probably never happen.
