I know that you can get it w/an external antenna, but how does that work when using the dvr functionality? I was hoping they would get local HD channels by Feb. when the new hd-dvr came out, any news?

You can pick them up now with an OTA antenna and record most of the channels on DVR. However, right now because of a glitch in the 942's software you cannot receive guide information on WWOR-DT (UPN) and WCBS-DT (although if you have a second dish pointed at 61.5 you can recieve this channel via satellite). This makes name based recording worthless on these channels, although you could still set up manual timers to record your favorate shows.

The satellite HD locals are slated to launch on 2/1 for NY, but they will only be available on the new MPEG4 receivers. The down side is that they will only start by broadcasting the big four networks (CBS, NBC, FOX and ABC) if you want UPN-9, WB-11, PAX or others, you will still need a OTA antenna. You will also not receive the digital sub-channels via satellite, so an OTA antenna would get you more channels than you would get via satellite.

So, unless you plan to get the new VoOm channels and the rest of the new MPEG4 channels, as long as you install an OTA antenna there is no real need to upgrade to the new ViP622. In either case an OTA antenna isn't a bad idea, as long as you can receive a signal. Remember also that the ViP622 was originally slated to be released in March and might not be available at all or only in limited supply 2/1. And, that the $200 rebate for 921/942 users is effective 4/1. Good luck on your decision.
