Best thing to do when you live in the sticks is to get involved in your local CO-OP if you have either a electric or phone one in your area (or work on forming one in your area). There are some great examples out there where rural areas are jumping to fiber optic systems. Lots of hard work is involved, but lots of government support is also available.
