Does the 721 work without service?

I am considering switching to D* if the viacom thing isn't resolved quickly. But I have about 60 hours of recordings on my 721 that I don't want to lose. Can I still watch the recorded programs on it even if I don't have service or will I have to dump everything to tape?

Here is a question I'm curious about. Does anyone know if it is possible to backup shows saved on a dvr (such as the 721/522, etc.) to a PC? That way you could burn them to DVD and watch them at your convenience or send to friends. Anyone done this?
