Don't tell people how to reset their passwords

I've noticed a few people on here telling people how to clear receiver passwords on Dish Network receivers. Please don't do this, just ask them to call Dish Tech Support. The Tech Support CSRs are competent enough to reset a password (at least most of them are, Dish has been doing big-time internal restructuring and competency testing. A lot of idiot supervisors and QAs have been placed back on the telephones and are being re-trained, so support should be improving.)

By telling these people how to reset the password without calling Dish, you are defeating the purpose of receiver locks. If someone buys an old 2700 on eBay and it's locked, Dish will gladly reset the lock for them. What is being done by telling people how to reset the password is probably not helping people with a legit need to reset their password, you're helping kids to order up pornography on their parents' receiver.

Why should we force people to tie up the CSRs at DISH if we can help them here? And I love how you automatically assume that anyone wanting a password reset is a child wanting to order porn. You certainly have a lot of faith in America's children. What's the difference in a child who knows the account password calling up DISH and resetting it that way? Maybe you should tell DISH to stop resetting people's passwords as well.

Here's your two cents back.
 
I agree if we can let them know why bother the CSR, let them handle other stuff, besides it isn't to hard to read a manual
 
The information needed to find the password for a locked reciever isn't anything you'll find in any sort of manual, legal that is.
 
"Certainly have a lot of faith in America's Children." Guess what, I'm one of them. I have very little faith in my fellow young people, and with good reason. Furthermore, my mother is a TSR 2/Advanced Tech at Dish Network's main technical support center. I asked her about these calls, and she says that most of the password-reset calls she gets are from people with a legitimate need for a password reset. However, she says that about 20 percent of these calls are from the children (Usually boys ages 12 and up), pretending to be their parents, or from other adults not authorized to the account. And believe me, most of the Dish CSRs and TSRs would rather take a password reset call than an intermittent signal loss or a 720p call.
 
All of the password request threads I've seen - here and at the other site - get the CORRECT answer - "Call DISH".

I think chaddux & Dish Dude are wrong on this topic. :(
 
Maybe it wasn't here, I get confused easily, but I've read several times, people posting a method of removing passwords without calling Dish. Usually, it's the same old 'sob story' that goes something like this: "I bought an (Insert Model Name Here) at (eBay, Yard Sale, Goodwill...) and it has a password on it. How can I reset this?"
 
Sometimes here, sometimes at the other forum. Doesn't matter - most of us agree that this is one area where we should NOT tell people the answer.
 
all they have to do on this or the other site, is do a search for "password reset" or "memory dump" ( I have done it before) and they will get an aswer.

shall we start to "scrub" the archives clean of this info also?
 
The site is here to help people, if certain people or satellite companies dont like that we are helping them out, then they should remove us from their bookmarks. :)

Scott - you miss the point I think.

If we could verify that the person asking for the procedure "deserved" to have it, as opposed to being a kid trying to bypass parental locks, then I'm with you.

Otherwise, we're interfering with other familys, and that's WRONG.
 
If the parents would spend more time watching what their children are doing then maybe we would not need passwords at all. Then again maybe the parents should be monitoring what their children are doing on the computer, again no need for this conversation.

if a kid is smart enough, and has enough free access to a computer to come here for a password to get some violence or porn on their parent's locked satellite receiver, they can get A LOT worse with just a few clicks of the mouse on that very same computer.

Sorry, no where on this site does it say "baby sitter service".

Kids are going to get the information one way or another, in a quick search I found out how to do it at all 3 sites, in a google search I found a ton of sites with how to do it.

If you are worried about your kids or others ordering PPV, then do what I did call up Dish and tell them to turn off the Impulse ordering feature on your receivers, this way to order PPV you need to call in.

If you want to prevent your kids from watching certain TV channels then you need to police them a little more. I wish the satellite receivers had the same perental controls many older cable boxes did, and that was a mechanical device where you could actually put a padlock on the box and lock out those channels.

We get hundreds of messages posted here a day, it is impossible for us to police them all, remember we are first and formost a satellite information site, or goal is to help all people with their satellite issues, its what we do best. :)

I was just coming here to say the same thing. Why would a kid waste the time resetting a receiver to purchase porn that will show up on the next bill and get himself caught? If he's here asking, then he can just as easily (and without leaving a billing trail) look up porn on the internet. The argument just doesn't work.
