DPP44 power inserter

I will be mounting the Dish 1000 + and the DPP44 switch. Right now I am only running one VIP211 HD receiver and maybe a second one in the future. Do I have to use the power inserter with the DPP44? If so, can I plug it in right behind the receiver or does it need to be in a certain strategic place along the RG6 run downstairs? Is the power inserter used for signal gain? Please explain. The switch needs more power than what the receiver can give it, which is what the inserter is for. You can put it behind the receiver. Make sure the cable it's hooked up to goes into port 1 on the switch.

(Some have posted using the switch without the inserter, but with only 1 receiver hooked up I don't think it would work. I've never tried it.)

That's correct. It will work but it's not recommended because only the receiver on port 1 is providing the power to the LNBs and the switch.

I've tried it on my own. My experience is it works for so long then nogo.

Tip: If you can put the power inserter next to the switch.

My power inserter is right behind the box and it has worked just fine for a year and a half. Just use it

You need it for long-term reliability. Close to the switch makes sense as long as you don't need to provide AC power at that location in order to place the inserter there, i.e., there's already an outlet nearby. Otherwise anywhere along the coax from the 211 to the switch output port 1 is OK. Most like myself just have it connected in line close to the receiver. I have at least a 40' run from there to the switch, then another 25' from the switch to the LNBs. That has all worked flawlessly since its installation about 15 months ago...
