We have tested and discussed the K1+ based on the Amlogic S905 here on the site. I have read about the VU+ Solo 4K. BCM has several new UHD chipsets that are targeting the subscription STB market, but a few FTA units are based on them. Understand that two NA distributors are working with the same HiSilicon 3798 chipset and factory to produce essentially the same OEM branded STB. I have tested several STB samples based on the 3798 chipset and it is quite capable. If properly developed and tested, it should be a nice economical hobbyist STB with excellent feature set.
