Has anyone tried to plug their DVD or VCR through the back of the 811?

Was wondering if the 811 would upconvert, if so, what would it upconvert it to?

Is there any advantage of running a progressive scan DVD player through the 811 instead of straight to the TV via DVI or Component.

I currently have my progressive scan DVD (toshiba SD4800) player hooked up through component, it provides a 480P picture. Can that be improved to 1080i

No, I wouldn't think so. The 2 inputs on the 811 are COMPOSITE which is actually a step below SVIDEO in quality. And neither COMPOSITE nor SVIDEO are progressive. I can't imagine the 811 would be able to do anything to a COMPOSITE image that would improve upon the progressive COMPONENT/DVI image coming straight from the DVD player.
