DVR Question

my TV is currently broken due to a bad color wheel. My DVR had still been working and I had been listening to audio of shows. Today the message APP appears on the DVR screen, it won't go to any channels and unplugging it and plugging it back in brings back this message. what does it mean?
I think I have the scientific atlantic 8300 hddvr.
