DVR Questions

Hi. I have a 625 receiver that records 100 hours. I'm recording a whole bunch of movies from Starz this weekend. And I'm almost at the end of my DVR space. I'm down to 8 hours now.

Here's the question. I just put all my recordings on "protect" mode so when the DVR runs out of space, I was wondering if anybody here knows what will happen? I know the "auto delete" feature comes on and takes out the oldest, unprotected recording but what if I "protect" them all? I'm guessing that the recording will stop once the space is all gone right but no programs (including the oldest recording) already on my DVR will be deleted? In other words, the oldest program I've recorded on my DVR won't be deleted right?

sounds about right, but I sure don't know for positive. Never tried it.
I used to know someone with the nick of fox mulder on irc? You ever go by that handle on Efnet?

Well I hope that's right. I've never really needed more space. I would have considered getting the 622 and more space had I found out earlier about the Starz thing. But I only found out about it on this message board the other day. There's no info on it on dishnetwork.com/preview or channels 280 and 298. And I didn't see any commercials on it either.

Hehe, actually I have used the IRC and used the nickname "Fox Mulder" before but not on Efnet. I was on the Undernet.

Okay, I got a question.

Will it hurt my DVR if I press the Power button a lot?

And what I mean by that is my DVR sometimes has some minor, annoying problems. Like it will change channels by itself right when I'm in the middle of watching a show, or turn off the tuner while I'm a watching a show, or a turn on a tuner while I'm asleep. Or sometimes when I check the Purchase History menu the whole screen will freeze.

So I usually reset the DVR by pressing and holding the Power button for 5 seconds (I got that little hint on the back of the quick reference guide I got when I first got Dish network) and that usually alleviates the problem at least for a while. Then when the problem comes back I press the Power button again.

This won't hurt the DVR long term will it?

Possible conflict with another STB Remote...

Fox,

I can't answer your question about pushing the power button, but when I first read your post, the thought immediately popped into my mind that the changing of channels could be caused by someone else (a neighbor) having their remote on the same address as yours. You may want to try changing your remotes address to see if that will solve the problem (on a long term basis).

Check your manual for the Box on how to change the Remote Address for the TV Tuner that keeps changing on you.

Hope this helps,
Geoff

Actually, that sounds like a pretty good idea. I just changed the address just now. So hopefully that helps. I never thought about that, that somebody else in my neighborhood could be controlling my dvr with their remote by accident. I also noticed that it only happens to TV tuner and remote control #2 also. Thanks, Geoff.

Also I was wondering, how do I know when my DVR is "on it's last legs"? I've read on other threads some people here say that or something to that effect about their DVR. And I was wondering what are the symptoms of that? Because I use my DVR a lot, record and delete stuff every single day since I got the dish.

We had a 510 box that we just upgraded that we knew was dying. Some of the symptoms we saw were that the DVR would lock up on us while trying to watch a program (usually something recorded), or it wouldn't allow us to rewind or fast forward in the program (you would push a button and it would jump all over in the program). It just started acting "weird." We did notice that it did these things more often when the drive was almost full (usually had under 5 hours--sometimes like minutes left) and would clear up some when we cleared out space.

However, having given this information, I know we had the 510 for a very long time (I am thinking we have had that box for probably 5 or 6 years) and was our main TV and used by everyone in the family for everything.

That's my 2 cents worth,
Geoff
