They were good up until 2 years ago. Now it seems as though a price increase is an annual holiday like Halloween or Christmas.

Both DISH and Directv have averaged $1 per month per year over the last 5 years. After the Viacom fiasco of DISH network I expect to see a $2-$3 increase in March of 2005. Directv will probably follow seeing they can. Increases have been below cables increases but they are still there.

It depends on your cable system. I compared E* and D*'s prices for their top package and our local Comcast is less for more channels. Anything below that and DBS beats Comcast, so it's a depends on your system and what you want who's cheaper.

Comcast may have a few more Premium movie channels mostly due to the extra West feeds and a few extra VH1 and MTV channels then D* and E*, however here in Chattanooga both E* and D* have more basic channels and more channels over all then Comcast has for the money when you do a close channel by channel and package by package comparison.

Our Comcast system has more movie along with 'basic' cable channels that both D* and E* for $86.99 vs D*'s TCP+Locals and E*'s $82.99 when you consider that the HD channels are included in that price vs. the additional $9.95 or $10.95 even when I though in the $5/month rental fee for the HD STB.

In addition unlike where your at the Disney channel on Comcast Chattanooga requires Digital Plus to get it. On our system it was a mixed bag, some looked great, most OK and a few really bad. Our system had just recently completed it's upgrade and the Comcast techs agreeed that there was a problem on the channels, but after four weeks of trying to find it I gave up.
My Comcast analog cable was pushing near $50/month for "expanded basic" - no premium channels (no HBO, SHOWTIME, etc.). Digital service was even more expensive for the same or very similar channels. The analog picture is cr*p on all channels.
Dish 120, no locals (use OTA), is about $35/month. Even the worst Dish compression is still better than analog Comcast. I paid for a years service and got the monthly price down a little more.
I save slightly more than $15/month and get better quality, by switching from Comcast to Dish. No brainer.

Remember,Cable(Comcast here)has all those extra fees-Franchise,Tax,HD boxes,Digital box-so their everything pack($91.99 here)you add at least $10.00 more a month.

I remember paying $19.95.... thats what grabbed my attention in 1999 (I think?) for satellite tv. I had to purchase my own receiver/dish and install it myself. Back then it was a lot easier to do since I only had to hit one bird which was 119.
Now, I can never get a great signal out of my dish 500.
