Echostar 12 over Columbia provides a nice example of beam patterns. E12 was one of the early spot satellites and transmitted spherical beams which become elongated into an elliptical beams when the satellite is aimed either east, west, north, or south of it's equatorial location . E12 at 61.5W produced elongated beams. Columbia is on the equator so the beams will have essentially zero north/south variation from spherical and are nearly spherical east/west since the satellite will be only about 10 degrees west of the beam center points.
