I have been an Internet user since 1995 and currently a member of thousands of message boards and groups. Today Satellite Guys becomes the first "legitimate site" in my own experience to betray user trust in the form of violating the get mail only from Administrators forum signup option. Historically this has been a way for users to opt out of spam type email and receive notices only critical to the operation of the subject forum or group. However apparently sales and the economy are bad enough for Satellite Guys to step to a new low and begin spamming people who have signed up for the forum and while desiring only to receive notices about items critical to their account and specifically they do not want their mailbox cluttered with advertisements.

So new users, keep this in mind when you sign up here, as this symbolically states that there is nothing this company will not do to bombard you with unwanted ads, regardless of your selections when you sign up here. Such a pity, as this was a group I formally had a great deal of respect for.

An example of what you will be receiving after signing up here (hey, today they ignore the option for only notifications from administrators, tomorrow it can be they ignore all your sign-up specifications):

This notice comes out once a year that there is a givaway Christmas contest.

Perhaps there should be a separate checkbox for the notice.

Ummmm, this so-called SPAM is from the owner of the website who, out of his own pocket, is giving away prizes in a raffle open to all members of Satellite Guys. It costs you nothing to get a prize except a little time to enter. If you don't want to enter, that's not a problem, you don't have to win anything that is free. This is not an ad, as you have stated. It is simply a message to every member to alert them that this is going on. Some folks don't log in a lot so this is a way to let them know what is going on so that, if they so choose, they can enter. Once again, it costs nothing at all to get the opportunity to win something, other than to be a member of Satellite Guys and have 5 posts. I think you owe Scott an apology...

Seriously?!

You've been here since 2007. How many emails have you received? This is the first I recall in a long time.

(This is NOT Spam, you are getting this message as you are a registered member of SatelliteGuys.US and have Opted In for Email from Administrators. If you would rather not receive these messages please check the bottom for Unsubscription Instructions.)

That's you, right?

And a member of thousands of boards and groups? Yeah, right....

It was an email from the administrator. ;) It was not sent out to those who have opted out from getting an email from an aministrator.

Its the first time in over a year we sent an email out and it was to let people know about the contest and all the things going on here. We were not trying to sell you anything, instead we were giving you a heads up so that you have a chance to participate in all we offer.

If you want SPAM then take a look at DBSTalk who has sent out TWO emails in a week advertising their contest (which I should note their contest started back in APRIL and as their last SPAM email stated they are not going to award the prize until they get 500 more entries... what kind of crap is that?)

Over the years I have been offered a LOT of money to sell our email list (and by a lot of money, I mean enough money to pay off my house and my two cars) and I declined the offers as our members info is NOT for sale.

I can't say when we will email again, probably in another year, but if you don't want them you can opt out as explained clearly in the email, it's that easy. :)

Good luck to everyone who enters to win and a big welcome back to many names and faces we haven't seen in awhile! It's great to see you back again!

I guess sometimes people just get bored.

And thousands of boards and groups?
I couldnt name a hundred that I am even aware of, much less a member of.
Only three I am active in are sonic, here, and pinstack (and not much there anymore since I left Cell South).
I can only think of two others that I am even a member of but only post occasionally (DBS, DZ)
Oh yeah, Rivals Sports once every six months or so.

Thousands.....wow.

If the OP really wants to take care of this a simple rule added to their email to automatically move any email from Satelliteguys to their junk filter takes care of this.

I question the legitimacy of the OP complaint to be quite honest. Again I love Tony's response! Tell it like it is!! :D

Maybe he would like to revoke his membership and improve my odds of winning a prize?
