When I was a young teenager, my brother gave me a paperback book named "Escape From Colditz". It was a true story about Allied prisoners of war who were detained in a German castle, the Colditz Castle during WWII, and their escape.

I read the book over and over again for many years. Recently, I found that the story was also made into a movie - years ago. It is B&W. I ordered this movie from Netflix and I received it just this afternoon.

I am watching it now. I hope that it is as good as the book.

I remember seeing the movie several years ago, never read the book....big fan of westerns and military movies.

I read "Day of The Jackal" by Federick Forsyth, then saw the movie several years later, the book was better...however read the original (3th?) book "Star Wars", then saw the movie in 1980, the movie was just as good as the book.

The book was definitely better. They left all the very best stuff out of the movie. It is a good movie, but I was disappointed because I know the book. I'd rate the movie a 5/10.

Radar > there was a TV series years ago about 1972ish in England very much based on the book by the BBC and P R Reid was their consultant.

It's available on DVDs Colditz - The Complete BBC Collection with 5 Limited Edition Art Cards & Collector's Booklet DVD: Amazon.co.uk: Jack Hedley, Edward Hardwicke, Robert Wagner, David McCallum: DVD
but is around $50, might be on ebay.co.uk for a lot better

If you ever get to London the Imperial war museum has a section on Colditz with lot of original stuff Items including the partielly finished glider

Thanks Pedro,

I will look into that series and see if I can find it. That sounds very interesting.

This movie didn't touch on the piece regarding the glider. It didn't get into them tunnelling into the sewage system by accident and it didn't touch on them making their own liquor, either. Lot's of stuff omitted.
