I am switching from dish to direct. can i use an external hard drive to take content off dish and use it on my direct dvr

You would need to get a recoder and play back all your shows. If you are doing HD transfers you will need something like the hauppage PVR HD PVR Product overview

There is no way to move programs between the two providers using a hard disk.
