External HD Question

My Dad has a Dish VIP 612 DVR receiver. He wants more recording capacity. Looking at mydish.com, it looks like any USB 2.0 external drive should work.

I would like to pick up a cheap drive if it will work. This morning I found a Fantom 1.5 GB drive for $60 which seems like a really good deal. Will it or other cheap options work?

My parents live about 2 hours away and will not troubleshoot anything themselves. Any money saved on a drive that doesn't plug 'n play will be lost when I have to drive there to work on it.

Any advice is greatly appreciated.

The Fantom 1.5GB drive should work fine since it has its own power. Very few of the self powered USB drive will actually work with the Dish receivers, but I have tried several different self-powered EHDs and they have all worked fine.

Thanks for the reply. The Folks did not pull the trigger on the $60 Fantom. I'll keep looking for a drive with its own power supply.
