So, I got my HR20-700S from Directv last week, and have a few questions. I had the TiVo SD box before, and loved the ease of use it had, and find the HR-20 kind of a pain at times. The picture quality is awesome, but here are my questions, maybe you can help me out...

1.)Switching tuners, with the TiVo box I could simply push the down arrow and it would allow me to switch tuners in the box, allowing me to pause what I was watching and go to the other channel without losing any time of the show on the the first tuner. (I watch alot of sports so this is my main reason for trying to figure this out.) On the HR20, I cannot find this function for the life of me, PLEASE tell me it exists!

2.)Blue LEDs on the front, yeah, they look cool, but when I am watching a movie on my TV with the lights out, its anoying as hell, is there anyway you can turn them off, or at least dim them? Whoever thought that was a good idea should be shot.

3.)Is there a way to just get the Guide when hitting the guide button? The sub menu is nice, but I would prefer it just goto the guide, anyway to do this?

4.)Why is it that the DolbyDigital only works when you turn it on manually? Maybe I am wrong, but it doesnt auto enable on channels with DD, I have to go into the audio settings each time and turn it on, then if I go to a channel without DD, I have to go back and turn it off, or I dont get any audio. The only audio connection I am using is the optical output.

Thanks for your time, and maybe you can help me out on this. I know for a fact, the wife definately liked our TiVo box alot better, and in a few ways, I miss the TiVo box myself.

There's an official HR20 forum @ DBSTalk with Official & Non-official Tips & Tricks for the unit stickied at the top of the page.

I've used TiVo myself for six years now and, while they might be the most recognizable and reliable DVR, they've allowed cobwebs to grow on the interface, IMO. I can schedule recordings much more quickly with the HR20 and isn't that the primary purpose of a DVR?

I still use and keep TiVos, but I've been open to a change and just like migrating from one operating system to another, there are adjustments to be made. It's easier for those of us who had DirecTV receivers before getting our D-TiVos. I remember seeing posts by people who'd just gotten their D-TiVo commenting on what lousy receivers they were, setting aside the DVR functionality. Using the HR20, I know where they're coming from.

If your wife likes the TiVo better, you could consider reactivating it for her for an extra $5/mo., especially if she watches a lot of SD programming. I personally use HD DVRs for HD programming only because it takes up much more space.

Good luck with your transition.

The blue lights can be turned off. On the box, hit left & right at the same time, ewach time it dimms, until it goes off. I'm used to mine now, don't bother me anymore.

Getting right to the guide, I just hit the guide button twice, goes right to it.

Sweet, thanks guys, now, how about the switching of tuners, thats really my only other complaint that I have, and havent found an answer to it yet.

You can't. The HR20 has dual tuners but *not* dual buffers which is what you are referring to.

Hit the guide button twice. If you have a universal remote like a harmony or MX series you can just program a macro to do it with one button push. Yes, I don't like it either but I've gotten use to hitting guide twice to the point I find myself doing it on my Tivo's.

4.)Why is it that the DolbyDigital only works when you turn it on manually? Hmmm, I have optical only and have no troubles. I know some people have had to enable DD and then red button reset to get it to work but that's when it's not working at all. If I had to guess it's a setting on your A/V receiver you need to set. I have to set mine to autodetect and then tell it how to decode the DD or PCM stream as. If I don't do this it will muff it up but good.

I sure hope they have a future plan to fix this in upcomming software upgrades, its retarded that you have to record both shows to flip back and forth... personally I think this is the biggest thing I dislike about this new box...

Audio is now working fine, so who knows why that was giving me issues before.
