My next door neighbor got an HR24-500 from 6th Avenue a week or so ago for that price. Talked to him tonight. He said they shipped within a day of putting in the order and it was shipped 3 day UPS. I'm probably going to get my next one through them.

I heard back from Directv management today and it sounds like they called their local warehouse here to have them ship another HR24 out to me. She said I should get it in a couple of days.

It sucks that I had to get really stern with them, keep escalating the issue and waste 3-4 hours on the phone to get a replacement.

I got a great deal and FAST shipping on mine, from Overstock.com. I think I paid like $178.

I got the same deal from Overstock..Sounds like your unit is deffective.

My two HR24s are holding up ok. Color is spectacular! Blows away dish and Uverse.

Good luck! I hope you get ones that work. Direc owes that to you!

I'm considering switching to DTV so I checked out a HR24 at a local Best Buy on a ~47" 1080P plasma. SD channels look really bad at 1080i from HR24 with a lot of big pixelation. The 480i->1080i scaler in HR24 seems to be of poor quality. I wonder if this can be fix in firmware or if the HW just can't do better.
I'v seem reports on other forums on this issue.

Got my replacement for the HR24 I bought today, another HR24-500.

This model definitely has issues with SD when you output it to 1080i in original format. It is very jaggy and bad looking.

Where has it been noted? I hadn't read that before and probably wouldn't have bought one if I had known.

Is it going to be fixed??? ETA?

This really devalues the speediness of the HR24 if we have to do that. It takes my Samsung plasma about 12 seconds to go from a 1080i to 480i channel with this receiver. Not good.

Was brought up next door at the other site. It has an issue with 480i to 1080i, so people think it looks better letting the tv do it. I only watch Rubicon, Dr Who and Being Human in SD, and they all look like crap anyways on a 50+" tv, so it never comes to mind. I also leave mine on 1080i all the time anyways.

IIRC, they are aware and working on it.

You guys actually watch SD still ?

OK, I 'll admit there is ONE show that I still watch in SD, that would be Star Trek NG, and thats only till the channel goes HD. Then it will at least look better.

Well, Directv better add HLN HD, BBCA HD, DIY HD, AMC HD, Denver PBS and then I won't have too much of an issue with this "problem".

Seriously though, I think this SD upconversion problem is pretty big and surprised it hasn't been screamed about earlier here. It looks worse than crappy. Is there a fix being worked on?

I'm also seeing a very very slight underscan as well in all modes and resolutions.

Did you recalibrate your TV after hooking up the new receiver?

Recalibrate how?

My monitor has been professionally calibrated.

On the "just scan" setting I can see that there's a few lines of underscan on the HR24-500 I have. My HR21's are dead on.

I've heard guys say that at DBS also. When you calibrate a display it's either with test patterns on a DVD/BR player or a signal generator. There is no way to "recalibrate" for the HR24, unless you use your eyes, and I'll not be doing that.

The color is going to be different with every piece of equipment you hook up to it. Each one has to be calibrated itself. You can't have a generic setting for everything, not 2 devices output the same signal

I know that, Im asking you how calibrate the input for a DVR, to adjust for the DVR. Answer is, there is no way. You calibrate your tv inputs to the standard, and make sure your movie player is right (with a test disc), because you want to make you view the movie at the standard. The DVR ends up being what it is, and it usually looks pretty good. There is no way to calibrate a HDDVR with a test disc.

They need to start adding test patterns to DVR's.
