We started with DIsh in 1997 with a 3000, 4000, installation kit ($49.99). Ordered ABC, NBC, CBS with east and west feeds for $5/mo (?). Installed the dish myself. Then locals came on 148 so a 2nd antenna was installed (San Francisco DMA). Upgraded to 508 where recording was at no charge (510 charged extra if I remember). HD with 6000 which did not last long and lost $$$. The rest is current history. Hopper, 2 Joeys, Wally and Tailgater. 29 years and counting. Most marriages don't last this long. (we will hit 42 next month). Rates continue to go up and my son's inheritance continues to get eaten.

The E & W "distant" broadcast network affiliates (NY-LA markets) were $4.99 back then. I think they came bundled together. Soon after, they added more distants (distribution nat'lly, outside of home areas) markets such as Chicago, San Diego, Atlanta, Dallas, Boston, Seattle, Denver (of course, as home of DiSH). I don't remember whether SF was ever a distants option). Maybe Charlotte? I believe you had to tack on more money to get more distants.

This was pre- DiSH's wars with the nets.

Got the 811 a bit early! But theres a problem. It has a card error saying incomparable card. Its a yellow dish500 card. Was wondering if dish could somehow pair it to the receiver (not activating obviously mpeg2) but just pair the card so I can be able to use it. It works with my 510s card on ota but soon as you power off and turn back on it says card error. And yes I tried yellow original one

I don't think you can put a card that was registered to one receiver into any other and obtain activation, or probably even minimal operation.

I still have all my Dish monthly paper bills from day one in 2007.
That should be quite a shock comparing those current prices to the old ones in 2007. I can remember paying like $19.99 for programming back in the early days and then the additional receiver fee and the East/WEST locals with Super Stations for like $8.00 a month. It was cheap back in 1997 compared to what I was paying to the cable company. They were charging like $45.00 for like 25 channels and locals were part of that. But it was just coax back then and no cable box.

This thread makes me feel old. We started with DiSH (when they still used that spelling) back around 1998 or 99. Bought, with installation, from a brick and mortar store. Originally a 4700 and a 4900 in the living room (allowing us to record one show on our VCR while watching another) and a 1000 in the bedroom. The 4700 was to be software upgraded to a 4900, that's what taught us about the meaning of SOON. Two dishes on the roof, a 500 and a second one to get the locals. We were pioneers, with the latest in technology - now we are becoming dinosaurs.
