I see that Dtv is running commercials saying that they're getting 100+ hd channels soon.
Anyone hear about that happening on Dish?

lakebum is right. lots of threads on this. No one knows if DirecTv will be able to deliver that much less whether DISH will be able to match it.

They've been good at claiming things. They've been claiming more HD since CES 2006.

There aren't 100+ national HD channels in existence. They're hoping for them to come on line by the end of the year. Dish can pick them up as well, when and if they do become available.

DirecTV is also claiming to have the best HD, and are being sued by a cableco over it (Time Warner?) The judge issued a restraining order against D* to make them stop with the claims. E* has better PQ and more national HD channels- 31. The only thing D* can claim is to have more local HD stations on line.

Plenty of threads on this, look around/search.

Yeah they might add more HD but most of the channels my guess would be "Locals" in HD not "National". Direct should be more clearer on their wording due to this is what got them in trouble before with their commercials. But for now its simple math due to after Dish added A&EHD that put them at 31 ""National Channels" of HD. If you get your 4 ""Locals"" in HD that would give you 35. Direct not even close so right now Dish is closer to 100 than Direct. :)

I believe taht the calim is 100 NATIONAL Channels but whether that includes RSNs (mostly blacked out) and/or PPV channels is unknown.

Speculation only, hard to say what Echostar is plannng to do. If the 15 VOOM channels were moved to the new mpeg4 encoders, that would open transponder space for 15 additional HD channels. Their still is a lot of locals on conus that might be able to move to spotbeam on their echoX satellite launched last year, to open up more conus tranponder space. At least another 8 transponders on 129 if moved to the new new mpeg4 encoders would open transponder space for additional 16 HD channels. If they required everybody use new mpeg4 receivers, 3 transponders on sat 110 would open 9 HD channels.

Just a guess, dish could add 15 to 30 additional HD channels and maybe up to 50 additional HD channels if everybody upgrade's to the mpeg4 VIP receivers for HD.

Well there is not 100 National channels that have a HD version of their channel up and running. Before any TV Service Provider can offer it the Network must have their HD Version of their channel up and running. I don't see that many Networks getting a HD Version of their channel up and running by the end of the year. This is not to say it will not happen but I doubt it will this year maybe in the next year or two. So right now its not up to Dish or Direct they half to wait until the network offers a HD version of their channel. One I would like to see is Sci-Fi Channel in HD but until that Network gets a HD version of their channel up and running no one can get it.

And if D* eventually does get 100+ HD channels, that's great. Thanks for prodding the networks to get off their collective a**es.

Does anybody really think that all those channels will be exclusive to D*? CNN-HD is supposed to be first to light up, maybe in September. You guys think E* won't get that one pretty quickly?

I thought they changed the commercials to say "Capacity for 100+ Channels". That only means they will have the space for the channels, not that there will be that many channels.

I saw the commercial with Christopher Lloyd saying DTV will have 3 times the HD capacity as cable

The details are right there on directv's website
http://www.directv.com/DTVAPP/global/contentPage.jsp?assetId=900034

"DIRECTV brings you our new HD DVR, soon with the capacity to offer 150 HD channels*, that's three times more than cable"

as mentioned by those replying to the origianal post, there is a BIG difference between having the CAPACITY for 150 HD channels and actually offering and transmitting 150 national HD channels. and, as previously mentioned, since there is not even close to 150 channels in existence, who cares?

Yeah well we will what national networks get their HD version of their channel up by this fall. But for now we I don't think there will be very many National Networks that will have a HD version on their channel up and running. I think we will see a few Networks get a HD channel up but not very many.

Well no one will half to worry about them sharing anything. Due to when the channels are available any provider will be able to carry them. But until there Network gets their HD channel up it really don't matter.

Yeah they can't share something that is not their's to begin with. Right now this is a dead subject due to everyone will half to wait and see whats comes out by this fall. For now Dish is the HD Leader. :)
