I opened my owned HWS today for a dust cleaning and took the attached pictures (iPod, so kind of crappy) for anyone curious about the internal components and layout. The hard drive is a Seagate Pipeline HD 2000GB (2TB), Model ST2000VM003.

I see there is still a seal on the disk cage. But at least it looks very easy to unplug that SATA cable and access the disk directly. 
I've wondered what's in there. What's the gold circuit board opposite of the HD? Pretty sure its the PS. Do these run linux of some sort?
Yeap - the best clue is you can see the power cord on the outside of the chassis.
Many previous Dish DVRs (up to the 722k) did and Dish even published the source code. Not sure if the Hopper does or not.
The long rectangular object closer to the HD (with the holes) looks to be an RF cage -- the RG6 from the node connects to it.

Yes power supply - AC wire going to transformer with smoothing capacitors, diodes & voltage regulators.
