Hopper with Sling vs Hopper 3

I have an offer from Dish that I can upgrade from my current VIP 612 to a Hopper with Sling for no installation charge. Since both the Hopper with Sling and the Hopper 3 carry a fifteen dollars a month charge I wonder why I would want the Hopper with Sling over the Hopper 3 other than the free installation. Note that I have only one TV and I live in Florida. Am I correct that either one would require a dish upgrade to the hybrid dish, which should be better in the Florida thunderstorms we get almost every day in the summer?

Tell them you will do it for the H3. Otherwise, no. I’ll bet they’ll agree or come back to you later with that offer.

Change in dish and LNB, yes. Not sure it will help reception.

I should have mentioned I only subscribe to the Flex package plus 2 add-on's, I suppose that would limit my bargaining power . I used to also have HBO but you know....

I claim the HwS does not require the hybrid dish. Perhaps that is why the upgrade cost is zero.

HWS does not require a hybrid LNB. Only the Hopper3 requires a hybrid configuration, either with a hybrid LNB or a 42 switch.

When the tech got here he didn't have certain parts on his truck so he switched me from the western arc to the eastern arc. I seem to recall he said he also gave me a hybrid dish, but am not sure about that. If I actually have the hybrid dish, would this mean I can swap out the HWS for an H3 with no other changes? How can I tell if I actually have a hybrid dish? Thanks.

Yes, if you have a hybrid dish you can just swap out a Hopper 3 for the HWS.

Hybrid only uses one wire from the dish to a orange colored hub, DishProPlus uses 2 wires from the dish to a grey colored node.

My dish is a grey dish that says Dish HD on the front. It has a single wire that goes to a separator (silver color, not orange) behind the receiver. The separator's label says "Dish Plus Separator 123254". So this is I presume a Dish Plus dish? It was installed when I moved here in June 2016.

That separator is not a Hopper compatible part. Are you sure you don't have a 722?

I went from a VIP 722 to a Hopper 3 about 2 1/2 years ago. Then it was $125 to upgrade. Others on this site would know current upgrade costs, but to me it was worth it for the 16 tuners plus 4K capability. Upgraded to 4K tv shortly after. Response speed may also be a factor for you as a hopper/sling not quite as quick as a Hopper 3.

If you only have a 612, a Wally might be a better option. $15/mo adds up quickly - $180/year.

Wally is $80, EHD $50, $40 activation fee, $30 AirTV adapter if needed = $200. After that, it's all savings.

I agree with everyone. You definitely want that Hopper 3. The difference between the HWS and the Hopper 3 is almost night and day.

Yup. The LNB is a DishPro Plus, which can feed both tuners on your 612 with a single coax.

That separator is not a Hopper compatible part. Are you sure you don't have a 722?

The 612 has two satellite (and 1 OTA) tuners just like the 722. I had both and loved them. Decent menus too.
