1984 BYU Cougars still benchmark for mid-major success - Stewart Mandel - SI.com

Very interesting article. A few observations:

1. BYU was very lucky. They began the year unranked and vaulted into the top 10 by beating 2 teams that went a combined 8-14 that year.

2. Everyone else lost. All the big boys fell, and South Carolina pissed away the best chance they ever had by losing to a 3 win Navy team when they were 9-0.

3. The media convinced themselves that BYU was for real even though they never beat anyone good. They were as overhyped as New Coke.

4. It will never happen again, although a playoff would have solved it, then as now.

It most certainly is very likely to happen again, under the broken BcS cartle. The BcS includes the major conferences (and Notre Dame) and a mid-major conference, the Leastleftovers.

In 2007, had not a 40 point underdog Pitt upset WVU, it would have played in, and might have just won the so-called BcS "championship". The Leastleftovers of today's era being grossly inferior to the mid-80s WAC.

Might?

If they win that game, West Virginia would have beat Ohio State by five touchdowns. The Mountaineers would have ran through, over, and under the Buckeyes.

Sam, you should be thankful that a Big East team would not have gotten a chance to play for it all- and I can't imagine how you would have felt.

The so-called "mid-major" conference has 6 BCS wins this decade.

To me, the ACC is the worst of the major conferences. In 11 years, they've won 2 BCS games.

Since when is a conference that sent the likes of Wake Forest to the Orange Bowl deemed to be worthy?

The pollster agree.

The Leastleftovers is a fraud, and the BcS is a fraud.

NOT ONE Leastleftovers is in the Top 25. None deserve to be.

But, whatever mid-major wins that woeful league, probably WVU or Pitt, will, AUTOMATICALLY and without deserving it, play in a BcS bowl. If that team goes undefeated, or ever just has less losses that the true majors in the BcS, that team, probably unable to finish in the upper half of any other BcS conference, will play for the "championship".

THREE non-BcS teams are in the top 25. If they go undefeated, they MIGHT, get assigned to the lowest BcS bowl and given some money. If they lose a game, they are out, and thank you very much.

BcS. Illegal. Broken. Fraudulent. Stupid.

Because it equates beating Rutgers, Syracuse, and Cincinnati, to beating Georgia, LSU, and Florida.

Give it up, Sam. You've been saying the same thing for three years. It's getting tiresome. We get it- you can't stand East Coast football.

Yet the ACC somehow how has three top-25 teams. None of them are that good.

If you're going to call West Virginia or Pittsburgh, two tradition-laden football schools, "mid-majors," then you clearly have no respect for East coast football. You don't respect anyone other than the SEC.

it equates beating Rutgers, Syracuse, and Cincinnati, to beating Georgia, LSU, and Florida.[/

And yet somehow, beating Duke, NC State, and Virginia is worthy of a BCS berth.
