Cape Cod - MA.
Hi All,

Been away from this board a few days and surprised to see no one (especially east coasters) has posted anything on this monster of a storm heading for the U.S. east coast.
How are you all preparing your dish for Sandy ?
Here in my area (Cape Cod) as things presently look, we're expecting winds and heavy rain to start ramping up Sunday night and continuing until Wednesday. Winds are expected to be anywhere between 45-65 mph with gusts over 85 MPH.
I'm going to do what I've done in the past and that is turn my dish to make the least amount of surface area available to the wind. Hopefully I will have power to move the dish slightly if the wind direction changes during the storm.
The exact path still isn't known, but the wind field is so large that even a hit several hundred miles south of me will still result in high winds and torrential rain.

This Hurricane is huge!!! Even thought we're about 1000 SE of it (Puerto Rico), the last two days we had large amounts of rain from a cloud streamer originating from Sandy.

Surprised to see a storm of that magnitude tracking that far North this late in the season. I would advise removal of dish reflectors only, as mounts and motors should not offer enough wind resistance to cause any trouble. This is what I did for Isaac this season and even for Katrina in 2005, and the mounts stayed properly aimed.

Most importantly, stay safe!

last year I left the motorized dish up but took down the fixed dish.
I was able to watch the weather channel on 72w until the storm rain fade cut off the signal.
I paid the price, the winds knocked the dish off by 10 degrees and I had to spend the next days re-aiming.

Hopefully I will have power to move the dish slightly if the wind direction changes during the storm.

Last year I had a car battery and power inverter to keep the sat receiver and tv going during the storm.

Sandy at the Jersey Sure,

Sandy is slowly approaching the New Jersey Shore we now have steady wind and rain. I live 30 miles north of Atlantic City and approximately 4 miles from Barnegat Bay. One of the predicted landing spot for the storm.

All barrier islands are being evacuated and all of the Atlantic City casinos will be closed as of 4:00 PM today. There have been mandatory evacuations 2 miles east of where I live. These are flood prone areas which have already experienced flooding and will get worse as the days progress. The predictions is the storm will make land fall some time late Monday, bring heavy rain and winds at 50 miles an hour, gusting up to 80 miles an hour.

I went out for the newspaper this morning and all of the gas stations had very long lines. There has been a run on food and water and Home Depot has been selling a lot of generators.

I have gassed up my car and van a couple of days ago. I have stocked up on all essentials days ago and even cooked a couple of days worth of meals.

My two FTA dishes are safely stored in my garage; I haul them out when I use them, the HOA frowns on them being permanently mounted.

The media from New York to Philly are having hurricane bulletins hourly and scaring the heck out of me and my wife. My wife and I are hunkering down and making our home as safe as possible. Just hope that we won’t lose electricity for a very long time.

Been in a couple of hurricanes down here in Puerto Rico, being the last one last year (Irene). Please do not disregard ANY WARNINGS given by authorities. It's better to be safe than sorry!!!

I live in Pittsburgh and I'm wondering if I should take down and of my dishes and / or OTA antennas. I'm thinking of taking down my largest OTA antenna, but might risk the dishes and hope for the best.

Depending on your dish just take the reflectors off and leave everything else. You have bigger problems if the storm takes those down.

A properly installed dish should easily make it through category one winds. If not properly installed, definitely take it down to prevent a deadly missile launch.

There's always the danger of something being blown into the dish. I left reflectors up for a Cat 1 back in 2005 (Cindy, before Katrina same season). While they stayed secure, there was so much debris flying through the air that I was concerned they'd be hit. Now, I remove the reflectors anytime winds are forecast to be above tropical storm force. It helps that my Ku-Band dishes (Channel Master and Azure Shine 3ABN) are designed in such a way that it is easy to remove just the reflector and leave the rest in place.

The hurricane is still over 200 miles away and there has been damage at the
shore points.

Ocean City is flooded and all exit off of the island are closed.
North Atlantic City had the boardwalk rip up and debris has floated in 3
city blocks from the ocean.
Long Beach Island is flood and they expect the island to breech to the bay in a few
places, they are talking about another inlet.
The Atlantic City Express Way is closed and the GSP is closed south of exit
38.
Picture on the TV have shown massive beach erosion all along the NJ shore.

All this and the storm is still 8 to 10 hours away from land fall.

There is a large expectation of electric outage lasting days or weeks.

Last night we have experienced periods of heavy winds and rain, so far all
is well at our house.
The sustained winds are now at 20 to 25 MPH, with bands of rain passing
through.
It looks like the storm is intensifying and picking up strength (winds at 90
MPH) before it slams into the NJ shore.
