Three years ago, celebrated director, producer and screenwriter JJ Abrams hinted at a collaboration in the works with Valve, developers of the award-winning Half-Life and Portal gaming series. Since then, though, things have gone rather quiet - perhaps unsurprisingly, given that Abrams has had his hands a bit full over the last few years, not least with overseeing two of the world's most popular entertainment franchises: Star Trek and, more recently, Star Wars.

Abrams has recently been promoting his latest project, the newly-released movie 10 Cloverfield Lane, and as IGN reports, he was asked in an interview if he could provide an update on his efforts to bringHalf-Life and Portal to the big screen.

He replied: "Not yet, but they're in development. And we've got writers, and we're working on both those stories. But nothing that would be an exciting update."

Interestingly, as Abrams himself acknowledged in the interview, the director of 10 Cloverfield Lane, Dan Trachtenberg, created a short fan-film called Portal: No Escape in 2011. The film won huge praise from the gaming community, and has since amassed over 17 million views on YouTube.

Of course, many questions remain about just what Abrams has in store for the Half-Life and Portalmovies, and the fact that the two franchises are set in the same 'universe' - with their respective events unfolding chronologically around the same time - raises all sorts of interesting possibilities.

For now, those questions remain unanswered, but in the meantime, you can at least get a taste of some live-action Portal goodness, in No Escape:
